Designated Teacher Training Conference 2019
On 27th June 2019, Southend Virtual School held their annual Designated Teacher Training Conference at Southend Pier Royal Pavilion. The theme of the day: ‘Self-Care and Wellbeing’, with key conversations surrounding how teachers may best look after themselves, in order to be effective in their support of vulnerable young people.
Mike Armiger, an experienced practitioner and Foster Carer, spoke on mental health and the ways in society currently deals with these topics, along with an in-depth look at our biological emotional responses to trauma. Sheila Mulvenny, an experienced Virtual School Headteacher, led a thought provoking presentation on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their impacts on physical health and life expectancy. This was followed by group sessions, using virtual reality headsets to give a 360 degree perspective of traumatic childhood experiences, which our Looked After Children often face.
A networking lunch in the sunshine and bracing winds of Southend Pier was followed by a question and answer session with the Virtual School staff. The conference concluded with the gift of a ‘self-care bag’ to attendees, filled with tools and treats, in recognition of the brilliant work that the Designated Teachers of Southend, do.
